(Port) Wine of the month May 2016: Quinta do Portal - Auru

Quinta do Portal’s Top Red Wine Auru is only produced if the owner Pedro Branco and his winemaker Paulo Coutinho are 100% certain, that it lives up to the quality. Only the very best grapes from the oldest vineyards of Portal’s estates make it into the wine, mostly Touriga Nacional, Tinto Roriz and sometimes a tiny percentage of Touriga Franca. Auru was only produced in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2011 with a quantity of some 5.000 bottles.

Auru 2011: Dark-red colour with little reflections. The bouquet reveals intense jammy cherry and cassis with a spicy finish. Complex and balanced on the palate with a compact tannic structure and mostly cassis and cherry fruit. Long aftertaste with noticeable tannins. A wine to keep. 18+
